There have been more than 100 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the Bristol region. Cases are rising across England, largely due to the new Eris variant which experts say could be worse than previous mutations.
According to the latest government data there were 86 confirmed cases in Bristol, in the week to September 3, equivalent to 18.5 per 100,000 people. In South Gloucestershire there were 41, 14.2 per 100,000 people and 52 in North Somerset, 24.1 per 100,00 people.
Nationally there were 8,961 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in England, 298 cases in Wales – equivalent to 9.4 for every 100,000 people – and 1,561 in Scotland – 28.6 for every 100,000. The rising number of new cases has led to the government in England rolling out the latest booster jabs earlier than planned in care homes.

The number of cases varies widely between localities. The government’s autumn booster campaign began Monday (September 11).
Barrow-in-Furness has seen the highest rates of new infections of any local authority in England. There were 25 new cases in the area in the week ending September 3, equivalent to 37.5 out of every 100,000 people in the area.
Copeland also had 25 new cases, but a larger population means that it works out as 36.7 for every 100,000 residents. Newcastle-under-Lyme had 42 new cases, equivalent to 32.4 per 100,000.
Stoke-on-Trent had 82 new cases at a rate of 32.0 out of every 100,000, while Craven had 18 new cases at a rate of 31.4, followed by Tendring with 46 cases at a rate of 31.2, Allerdale with 29 cases at a rate of 29.6, and Staffordshire Moorlands with 29 cases at a rate of 29.5.
