Jill Karnicki/Houston ChronicleWhataburger is offering a free burger to Houston customers who make a donation to a local food bank as part of the Texas-based fast-food chain’s annual fundraiser to help aid food insecurity, with help from the Houston Texans.
Beginning Monday, diners can get a free Whataburger with a $1 donation to the Houston Food Bank. Customers will receive a “thank-you” coupon with their donation, although the coupon is only valid with purchase of a medium fry and a 32 oz drink. The offer will be available at any of the 150 Whataburger outposts across the city until Oct. 9.

The event will kick off at a Friendswood Whataburger location, where Houston Texans, Whataburger and Houston Food Bank officials will gather from noon to 1 p.m. to celebrate the fundraiser’s ninth year. The Texans mascot, TORO, Texans cheerleaders and Texans former football player, Travis Johnson, are also scheduled to attend.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward the Houston Food Bank’s child hunger programs. Since the fundraiser began in 2015, Whataburger diners have raised nearly $1 million for the charity, providing over 2 million meals to Houstonians, according to the announcement.
